Why WestJet Workers Voted to Strike
Video explainer produced in collaboration with Northweather and CUPE 8125
CUPE 8125 represents the WestJet flight attendants who were preparing to strike for ground pay: the unpaid hours spent reporting for duty, clearing customs, attending safety briefings, boarding passengers, cleaning aircraft and waiting through delays. Haq’s video was one part of CUPE’s wider public campaign, helping workers explain the issue to passengers, media and government.
The creative problem was turning schedules, wage calculations, labour history and testimony into a clear story without losing complexity, urgency or humour. While the video had to be entertaining and enlightening, it also had to be journalistic with rigorous research and flight attendant interviews.
Haq developed the story through campaign planning; reporting and interviews with flight attendants; and scripting for a three-minute vertical explainer and a seven-minute YouTube deep dive. Haq produced, narrated, animated, edited and sound-designed the videos, and developed a companion article for The Tyee. Together, the pieces made flight attendants' unpaid work concrete and shareable.
